The PATRIOT Act Renewal did not pass Congress on Tuesday.
In perfect timing, Homeland Security Secretary Napolitano said this onWednesday:
“….. the threat today may be at its most heightened state since the attacks nearly 10 years ago.”
“We understand full well that Islamist-inspired, Al-Qaeda-inspired, however you want to call it, terrorism, be it coming from abroad or now being homegrown, is part and parcel of the security picture that we now have to deal with in the United States…”
She was not alone: The White House issued a statement before the Tues. vote saying the Administration would actually like a longerrenewal:
“The administration would strongly prefer enactment of reauthorizing legislation that would extend these authorities until December 2013.”
“… the administration does not object to H.R. 514.”
She was also backed up by the U.S. Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, who said terrorism is still the biggest threat we face just during a House hearing hours before the PATRIOT Act renewal was due to be back in the House.
Thursday night the PATRIOT Act renewal passed the House and is now awaiting approval from the Senate.
As if that sequence of events was not bad enough, it was something else that Napolitano said that really bothered me:
“They are also encouraging individuals in the West to carry out their own small-scale attacks, which require less of the coordination and planning that could raise red flags and lead to an attack’s disruption.”
“These groups are trying to recruit people to carry out attacks that have connections to the West, but who do not have strong ties to terrorist groups that could possibly tip-off the intelligence community…”
“This means that the threat has evolved in such a way that we have to add to our traditional counterterrorism strategies, which in the past have looked at the attack as coming from abroad…”
If you have been paying attention the last few years then you know that those statements are patently false. In fact the FBI has been very active in recruiting and providing material for otherwise regular people like Mohamed Osman Mohamud:
…. the supposed explosive was a dummy that FBI operatives supplied to him, according to an affidavit in support of a criminal complaint signed Friday night by U.S. Magistrate Judge John V. Acosta.
Napolitano is throwing threats of “terror-threats” around without any accountability. If in fact we are being threatened with “terror-threats” only to pass legislation like the PATRIOT Act, that in effect is terrorism – and I thought America didn’t negotiate with terrorists.
